The only thing that stands in the way of happiness for suburbanites Jenny and Richard is lack of money; enter Mrs. Toothe with a titillating proposal about how to fix the situation. A brilliant, biting play that blends humor, irony and suspense in its examination of suburbanites' love affair with money.
Everything in the Garden is set in the 1950's and is very period oriented. Most of the characters appear to be nice decent people and think of themselves as nice decent people. They participate in some some bizarre activities as the play progresses, but they remain at their heart decent suburbanites. Edward Albee considers the play a comedy of manners.
Jenny - an attractive woman. She appears to be the perfect suburbanite wife. Although she is overly money conscious she has a pleasing natural way about her. 30's - 40's.
Richard - Jenny's husband. A pleasant looking man. He is what most people would think of as a good husband and a good neighbor. 30's - 40's
Roger - Richard and Jenny's son, a nice looking boy. Richard is a nice kid who is wiser than his parents. He is innocent enough to not see how people can judge others based only on race, religion, or money. 14 or 15.
Jack - a neighbor. Pleasant looking. He does not need to work due to a large inheritance. He drinks too much and has a crush on Jenny. He also serves as a sometimes narrator to the show. 40 - 50
Mrs. Toothe - an elegantly dressed, handsome lady. She is a madam, and a very efficient business woman. 50 - 60.
Beryl - a friend of Jenny's and Richards' - 30's - 40's.
Chuck - Beryl's husband 30's - 40's. Perhaps 50.
Louise - a friend of Jenny's and Richard's 30's - 40's.
